Widman’s Market Update

A seasonally unusual cash market has many traders scratching their heads. Sales volumes remain very light. Inventory in the field is not heavy, but mills generally have stock. Transportation issues abating. Construction sites continue to struggle on sourcing labor and locating buildable lots. Pent-up building demand continues to simmer. WSPF #2&btr 2x4s are quoted in a tighter range of $350 wholesale – $360 mill per Mbf. Quotes at this time last year were trending far higher in a range of $505 – $510 per Mbf. Given pent-up demand seems a foregone conclusion, some serious discount work may still be required. While we still see a significant price spike further ahead, for now, expect volatile waters in either direction.
